Manchester University Press offers a range of marketing and publicity services to support the publication of our titles. We set out to ensure that our titles reach all potential channels of distribution suited to each individual book.
Where appropriate, books are promoted for sale to general readers as well as libraries, students, academics, retail and wholesale customers. We are also taking steps to ensure our books are available in an e-format, across a range of different platforms.
Our marketing, promotional and sales activities include:
Seasonal and subject catalogues
All new books appear in either our Spring/Summer or Autumn/Winter catalogue. These catalogues are available to download from our website, and are mailed to approximately 7000 UK and European retail customers, including campus bookshops, independent retail accounts, major national accounts, and wholesale distributors. The catalogue is also mailed to academics and librarians throughout the UK.
Both backlist and frontlist titles may also be included in one or more of our subject catalogues: Social Sciences, History, Literature and theatre and Art and Visual Culture.
Retail activity / library suppliers
Our titles are presented to the retail trade in the UK by Yale University Press, a dedicated team of sales representatives. Sales presentations are made to the major library and retail wholesalers and to the major national retail chains. Yale also actively sell into key independent bookstores nationwide and all campus bookshops. We also have a dedicated sales team working in Europe and across South and North America via Oxford University Press.
We hold regular sales conferences to present our new titles to our team of sales reps. The sales conferences also provide an opportunity to discuss sales figures, key promotional campaigns and trends in the market. We maintain a close relationship with our team of sales reps, to ensure they are familiar with our titles, and to collect up-to-date intelligence about the retail market.
Exhibitions and conferences
We attend a variety of major academic conferences throughout the year. Our books are available for purchase at a discount. Flyers or catalogues can also be sent to relevant conferences that we are unable to attend.
We publish monthly subject e-newsletters that include new publications, recent blogs and a monthly special offer which we apply to a range of books on a particular theme.
We can also provide a title flyer for authors/editors to distribute to colleagues and during lecture tours. Please contact your marketing representative (see details below) to request a flyer.
Review copies are sent to publications and other relevant media that have either requested a review copy following a catalogue mailing or press release. Authors should also make a note in their marketing questionnaire of any publications that might consider reviewing their title. The final review list can be discussed with your marketing representative in the weeks before publication.
We actively encourage our authors to write blog posts or produce podcasts for the MUP blog. The blog provides an informal space to discuss our tiles in more detail, and increases their visibility among online communities. We are also active in outreach initiatives that will help increase the reach of your blog through guest publication on relevant websites and academic forums. See the MUP blog for more information, or contact your marketing representative if you would like to discuss content marketing opportunities in more detail.

Amazon and other online retailers

Search Engine Optimisation and Discoverability
We understand the internet is one of the most powerful communication tools in promoting your book and are always looking for new ways to enhance discoverability. This includes the utilization of keywords in promotion and book metadata, such as title and synopsis. We also encourage links to your book to aid discoverability, as well as the creation of content about your book as a way of amplifying its online presence. MUP has a dedicated analytics team who can help advise on this subject.
